This post will walk you through what that report card comment really means and what it doesn’t mean. Most importantly, we’ll explain exactly what you can do to help your child catch up and feel confident in their reading.

What does it mean when the teacher says my child is “Behind in Reading”?

When you see “Reading: Below Grade Level” on your child’s report card, it can make you feel uneasy.  But it’s important to understand what it’s actually telling you.

This comment typically means your child is not yet meeting the expectations for reading in their current grade. That could mean they are:

  • Struggling to decode (read) unfamiliar words
  • Reading slower or with less accuracy than expected
  • Having difficulty understanding or retelling what they read

You can learn more about grade-level expectations for reading in this blog post.

“Behind in Reading” does NOT mean:

  • It doesn’t mean your child isn’t smart.
  • It doesn’t mean you’ve failed as a parent.
  • And it definitely doesn’t mean your child can’t become a strong reader.

The truth is, many kids need more time or a different kind of support to get there.

You don’t need to stress. You need a simple plan.

Let’s find out what skills your child has already mastered, where the gaps are, and how you can take action at home in a way that actually works.

Why is my Child Behind in Reading?

The truth is that a lot of kids struggle with learning to read. Even in great schools. Even with attentive parents and dedicated, caring teachers. But why?

Sometimes the teaching methods didn’t align with how your child learns best.
Sometimes the instruction wasn’t explicit, systematic, or targeted to your child’s needs.
And sometimes kids just need more time and practice.

Why is my child behind in reading?

Whatever the reason, it’s not a reflection of your parenting and it doesn’t mean your child isn’t bright. It just means they need a different kind of support.

If your child hasn’t yet developed essential reading skills like:

  • Phonemic awareness (hearing and working with sounds in words)
  • Sound-letter knowledge (knowing which letters make which sounds)
  • Blending and decoding (sounding out words to read them)

…then simply reading more won’t solve the problem. In fact, it can make reading feel even more frustrating.

So what WILL solve the problem?

What Helps a Struggling Reader?

A clear, research-backed sequence of skills
Children need to learn reading skills in a specific, logical order. When instruction follows this proven sequence, there are no gaps, confusion or overwhelm. You can learn more about the sequence of reading skills in this post.

Plenty of opportunities to review and practice
Mastery doesn’t happen in a single lesson. Struggling readers often need repeated exposure and targeted practice to master each skill. Fun, consistent review helps those skills stick and helps to build confidence.

Instruction that builds confidence
When a child finally reads a word on their own or finishes a sentence without guessing, something shifts. They start to believe they can do it. We build on these moments by introducing skills gradually and celebrating wins along the way.

An approach grounded in how the brain actually learns to read
Reading isn’t a natural process. It has to be taught in a way that aligns with how the brain processes language and symbols. Sure Start Reading follows the Science of Reading to make learning efficient, effective, and evidence-based.

With the right support, your child can become a confident, capable reader. That’s exactly what we do at Sure Start Reading.
