I Think My Child Is Struggling with Reading – What do I do?

Struggling Reader

Are you worried your child may be struggling with reading? In this post, we share tips for what to do if you are worried about your child’s reading progress and offer you a free Beginning Reader Parent Toolkit to help support you your reader at home.

If you’ve ever wondered, Shouldn’t my child be reading by now?, you’re not alone.

Maybe they’re in kindergarten or first grade and still struggling to recognize letters. Maybe they guess words based on the pictures, or avoid reading altogether.

And yet… you’ve heard people say:

“All kids learn at their own pace.”

“Don’t stress.  They’ll catch up.”

“Let’s just wait and see.”

But deep down, something doesn’t feel right. You really think your child is struggling with reading.

So, what should you do? Do you wait and see, or act now? Let’s talk about it.

If you are worried about your child's reading progress, let Sure Start Reading help you.

Why the “Wait and See” Approach Can Be Risky

It’s comforting to believe that everything will sort itself out. But when it comes to learning to read, waiting too long can actually make things harder for your child.

Reading is a foundational skill. If a child doesn’t master it early, it affects everything else.  It can trickle down to their spelling, writing, comprehension, and even their confidence.

And research backs this up. According to the National Reading Panel, early intervention is one of the most powerful ways to help struggling readers succeed. In fact, children who are behind in reading at the end of first grade rarely catch up without structured, targeted support.

That’s not meant to scare you. It’s meant to empower you.
Because the earlier you act, the better the outcome.

What Reading Challenges Might Look Like

Every child is different, but here are some common signs that a child may be struggling with early reading skills:

🔸 They have trouble remembering letter names or sounds
🔸 They guess words instead of sounding them out
🔸 They confuse similar-looking words (like was and saw)
🔸 They resist reading or say it’s “too hard”
🔸 They can’t rhyme or identify beginning sounds in words
🔸 They seem to know words one day and forget them the next

You don’t have to check every box to be concerned. Even one or two concerns is a good reason to dig a little deeper.

What You Can Do Right Now

Here’s the good news: There’s SO much you can do before formal testing, tutoring, or school interventions.

✅ 1. Trust Your Gut

You know your child better than anyone. If something feels off, you’re probably right to look closer.

✅ 2. Learn About the Foundations of Reading

Understanding what skills come before fluent reading, like phonemic awareness, will help you figure out where your child might need support.

✅ 3. Start Small, But Start Now

Even short, 10-minute reading routines can make a big difference. Focus on sound games, practicing letter-sound connections, or reading simple decodable books together.

✅ 4. Talk to Your Child’s Teacher

Ask about your child’s reading assessments. What’s going well? What specific skills are they working on? Are they receiving any extra support in the classroom?

✅ 5. Look for Evidence-Based Support

Programs based on the Science of Reading, like Sure Start Reading, that are designed to teach reading explicitly, step-by-step, and in ways that research has proven.

It’s Not “Just a Phase”

Learning to read isn’t something kids just figure out on their own.
It’s a complex process that requires explicit instruction, lots of practice, and just-right support.

The earlier a child receives that support, the easier it is for them to catch up.

So if you’re worried don’t wait.
Your concern isn’t overreacting.  It’s proactive parenting.
